We are proud to introduce our 2012 season with a visit to one of the most scenically breathtaking, yet relatively unexplored regions of France. We discover the ravishingly beautiful countryside of the Tarn Gorge and the causses, enlivened by the bells of grazing sheep, still the wealth of the region!
Visits have been carefully planned to sites of fascinating history, architecture, scenery and art as well as tastings of cheese and wine. We explore the impressive Knights Templar walled village of La Couvertoirade, the historic hilltop town of Cordes-sur-Ciel and the unique cities of Rodez and Albi with their imposing cathedrals. We shall stay at the welcoming hotel Le Chiffre in Albi and at the Mercure International at Millau near to the site of the world-renowned Millau Viaduct designed by Sir Norman Foster. The impressive abbey church of Conques, a stage on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, is a memorable visit. We travel to Figeac, the hometown of Champollion who unlocked the mystery of the Rosetta Stone. We learn of the renowned painter Toulouse Lautrec on our guided tour of his home at Chateau du Bosc and on our visit to the collection of his paintings in Albi at the Bishop's Palace.
This Francophiles holiday offers a wealth of contrasts. We savour the Gaillac wines and the celebrated Roquefort cheese in addition to enjoying the market in the medieval square of Villefranche de Rouergue. This area of sun, history and culture viewed at a leisurely pace will give experiences to relish and treasure.
