Steeped in history, Languedoc-Roussillon is a land of great contrasts and rustic charm. From the ancient vineyards clinging to the hillsides to the sun-drenched coastal villages and the awesome majesty of the Pyrenees, the enduring influence of the landscape on local lifestyles is a wonder to behold.
The region is blessed with a range of striking historical spectacles. We visit the Abbey de Fontfroide, experiencing the turbulent history of the monks in this fascinating monastery. We also enjoy a tour of the hillside fortress of Carcassone with its narrow cobbled streets and ancient walls that dominate the local landscape.
A visit to the region would be incomplete without the opportunity to sample some of the wine for which Languedoc-Roussillon is renowned and our tour takes in the sumptuous delights of Banyuls which produces a myriad of wines and 'ports' with something to satisfy most tastes.
We will savour the maritime ambience from our first base, near the coastal town of Sete at our comfortable hotel, the Mercure Balaruc-les-Bains. From here we explore the delights of Montpelier, Narbonne and the traditional Vermouth distillery of Noilly Prat.
Our second base is the beautifully-appointed Park Hotel in Perpignan from where we will visit the splendour of the Catalan area of the Pyrenees and the delightful coastline around Collioure, beloved of painters.
